Hundreds had gathered for an event called Chanukah by the Sea near Bondi Beach’s children’s park when the attack was launched on Sunday evening.
One gunman, aged 50, was shot by police and died at the scene, while a second attacker, a 24-year-old man, suffered critical injuries and was taken to hospital under police guard.
New South Wales police commissioner Mal Lanyon told a press conference on Monday morning that the attackers were father and son. He also confirmed the 50-year-old man was a licensed firearm owner.
New South Wales’ health minister Ryan Park said that a ten-year-old girl taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital was among those who had died. At least 40 people are receiving treatment in hospital, including three other children.
Officials said 14 people died at the scene with the child and a 40-year-old man later dying in hospital. The victims range from 10 years old to 87.

Attackers father and son, police say

Albanese: Attack was a 'dark day in Australia's history'
The Australian prime minister is speaking at a press conference.
Anthony Albanese said yesterday was “a dark day in our nations history” but said Australia is “stronger than the cowards who did this”.
He vowed to do “whatever is necessary” to stop antisemitism, as he called Sunday’s attack “evil”.

Three children remain in hospital
New South Wales Health Minister Ryan Park said the death toll had risen from 12 to 16 overnight, including a 12-year-old child.
Three other children are being treated in hospital, he said.
"This is absolutely horrendous for the community broadly, but particularly the Jewish community. … What we saw last night was the worst of humanity, but at the same time, the very best of humanity," Park said.

Bondi Beach to remain closed on Monday, say police
New South Wales Police said Bondi Beach will remain closed on Monday following an attack that killed at least 16 people.
"Bondi Beach and surrounding roads in the Bondi area will be closed today as investigators continue to work through the crime scene. Aircrafts including drones are prohibited from flying over the crime scene," a statement said.
